Wheelchair Accessible Cabo: Resorts, Airport Help and What We Check

If you or someone in your group uses a wheelchair, you want straight answers before you book, not a glossy list. So here's what we actually know about getting around Cabo on wheels, where each piece of that comes from, and the part we check for you by hand.

The short version: a lot of resorts and restaurants here list accessibility features, and the airport runs a free assistance program. But a tag on a listing can't tell you whether your room has a roll-in shower or a step down to the terrace. That's why we call or message the resort, villa or boat and confirm the details with them before you book.

How we check accessibility for you

Tell us what you need. Roll-in shower, grab bars, door widths, bed height, a step-free route from your room to breakfast, help getting on a boat. We ask the resort, villa or crew directly and come back to you with a clear answer before you pay anything. If we can't get a clear answer, we'll tell you that too, and we won't guess.

Getting through Los Cabos airport (SJD)

Los Cabos International Airport is one of the airports run by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP). GAP has a free program called GAP BLUE for travelers with temporary or permanent disabilities, visible or not. It's set up to help before, during and after your trip.

• When to ask: GAP suggests requesting it at least 72 hours before your flight.
• Want a practice run? You can ask for a familiarization visit at the airport up to 7 days before you fly. They ask for proof of travel.
• How to ask: through the GAP Airports app, the contact form or chatbot on the GAP BLUE page, or at the airport information desks.

GAP also lists SJD as holding Airports Council International's Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation, Level 1, for 2024 to 2027.

Your airline handles the wheelchair to and from the plane

Tell your airline about your wheelchair and the help you need when you book. If you're flying a US airline, or any airline on a flight to or from the US, US federal rules (14 CFR Part 382) apply, and they say the airline can't charge you for the disability assistance those rules require. Most of that help can't be made to depend on advance notice. The airline can ask for 48 hours' notice for a few specific things, like using a ventilator, CPAP or portable oxygen concentrator on board, or flying with an electric wheelchair on a plane with fewer than 60 seats.

A few more list something useful without the "wheelchair accessible" tag. The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, Hilton Los Cabos, RIU Palace Cabo San Lucas and Hotel El Ganzo list facilities for disabled guests and a lift. Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos lists wheelchair accessible parking and Braille signage.

Villas: we'll ask for you

We'd rather be straight with you here. Only one of our villa listings mentions an accessibility-related feature: Villa Savina in Pedregal, which lists an indoor elevator that serves all 5 levels. That helps a lot, but it doesn't tell you about bathrooms, door widths or the pool deck, so we'd check those with the villa team before you book.

Boats, tours and beaches

Mexico's accessibility rules, in plain words

The ADA is a US law, so it doesn't cover hotels or restaurants in Mexico. Mexico has its own federal disability inclusion law, the Ley General para la Inclusión de las Personas con Discapacidad. Article 27 tells the national tourism ministry to promote access to tourism for people with disabilities and to set programs and standards so tourism infrastructure has universal accessibility features. That's a goal written into law, not a promise that every room or doorway meets it. It's exactly why we check.

A few habits that make the trip easier

• Write down your must-haves (shower type, bed height, door width, number of steps you can manage) and send them to us before you book.
• Ask for the room's accessibility features in writing with your confirmation.
• Tell your airline about your wheelchair when you book, and request GAP BLUE if you'd like help inside SJD.
• Pack chargers and spare parts for your chair or scooter.
