What a Cabo sportfishing charter actually costs

Short answer

The best fishing in Cabo San Lucas depends on the month: striped marlin peak from November to May, and blue marlin, yellowfin tuna and dorado peak in the summer and fall. We book 34 private boats, 23 from Cabo San Lucas and 11 from San José del Cabo, from $498 to $4,837 for the whole boat with taxes included.

Sportfishing charters in Cabo run $498 to $4,837 all-in. You book the whole boat, not a seat, and the price is the same whether you bring one angler or fill it. Our fleet is 34 boats from 23 to 60 ft carrying up to 10 anglers, out of the Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo marina. Cabo San Lucas boats book as a half day or a full day; San José del Cabo boats run one 6-7 hour trip at one price. Captain and crew, premium rods and reels, one Mexican fishing licence, dock fees, ice, water, bait when available and all taxes are included in every price you see. Gratuity is not included. 15-20% is standard in Cabo.

What you catch

Marlin, dorado, tuna, wahoo, roosterfish

Cabo sits where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, and the species list reflects it: marlin (striped, blue and black), dorado or mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and roosterfish.

Billfish are catch and release. Marlin get a photo and go back in the water.

Tuna, dorado and wahoo are the fish you keep. Fish cleaning is not on the included list.

We are not going to promise you a fish, and nobody honest will.

When is the best fishing in Cabo San Lucas?

Every month has a fish at its peak, but the target changes: striped marlin own the winter and spring, and the summer and fall bring blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna and dorado.

October and early November are usually tournament weeks. Los Cabos Offshore comes first, in the middle of October. Bisbee's Black & Blue, for black and blue marlin only, takes the last week of October. The Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot follows early in November.

Here are the peak months, fish by fish. They are peak months, not promises: marlin follow the currents and the water temperature.

  • Striped marlin: November to May. The everyday billfish of Cabo, catch and release.
  • Blue marlin: June to December. The trophy fish. 300 to 800 lb is common.
  • Black marlin: June to November. Less common. Granders, fish over 1,000 lb, happen.
  • Sailfish: June to December. Acrobatic and fast, catch and release.
  • Yellowfin tuna: May to November. Great eating. Cow tuna over 200 lb are possible.
  • Dorado (mahi-mahi): July to October. Colorful, fast, great eating and a kid-friendly catch.
  • Wahoo: October to January. Very fast, a light-tackle fight and a premium table fish.
  • Roosterfish: April to October. Inshore, close to the beach, on spinning tackle.
  • Cubera snapper: all year. An inshore reef fish that fights hard.
  • Yellowtail: December to March. Inshore. It arrives with the cold water.

The best fishing charters in Cabo San Lucas for your group

We do not rank one charter over another, so the best fishing charter for you is the size that fits your group and your fish, and our 34 boats come in three sizes.

  • Inshore boats take 3 to 4 anglers. Roosterfish and snapper, close to the beach and the reef, are the inshore targets. The 23ft Panga at $498 for a half day is the lowest price in the fleet. See the panga and inshore boats.
  • Mid-size sportfishers take 4 to 6 anglers. With 6 on board, the 33ft Owens at $928 for a half day works out to about $155 each. See the local sportfishing boats.

Los Cabos sportfishing: two marinas, two kinds of day

Our Los Cabos sportfishing boats leave from two marinas: 23 from Cabo San Lucas and 11 from Marina Puerto Los Cabos in San José del Cabo.

The Cabo San Lucas boats sell a half day or a full day. The San José del Cabo boats sell one trip of 6-7 hours at one price. That marina is closer to the Gordo Banks, two underwater seamounts about 15 miles offshore from San José.

We have no reviews tied to any of our 34 fishing boats, so this page shows no rating.

Here is what to check before you book any Cabo San Lucas fishing charter. Look for real photos of the boat itself. Ask what is included: license, gear, ice and lunch. Be careful with anyone who shows no boat photos or wants all of the money in cash up front.

On our side, each of the 34 boats has its own photo on its page, and the included list is the same for all of them.

How it works

Pick a boat, pick a day, the captain does the rest

  1. Pick your boat and trip length

    Half day or full day (one 6-7 hour trip in San José), priced for the whole boat.

  2. Hold it with a $500 deposit

    On trips over $500 the deposit locks your date and the balance is settled before your trip. Anything at or below $500 is paid in full when you book.

  3. Meet your captain at the marina

    Charters depart Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo, depending on the boat. Your captain confirms the exact dock and departure time with you before the trip.

Cancellation

The same terms on every boat

More than 72 hours before your trip: 75% refund. From 48 to 72 hours before: 50% refund. Under 48 hours, a no-show, arriving late, seasickness or heading back early: no refund. If the port is closed, or the captain or tour team cancels for weather or safety, we move you to a new date. If no new date works for you, you get a full refund. Light rain or choppy water that the captain calls safe is not a cancellation.

Cabo Sportfishing FAQs

Shared boats, sailfish, rentals, packages and guides.

You cannot book a shared seat with us. Every one of our 34 boats is booked as a whole boat for one group, so there is no shared fishing charter to join. The closest thing is to fill a small boat. The 23ft Panga takes 3 anglers, so its $498 half day is about $166 each.

Sailfish peak from June to December, and they are catch and release. They are a billfish, and billfish days usually run offshore, on boats of 32 ft and up, on a full day. That is the 13 premium sportfishers and 3 mid-size boats that sell a full day. In Cabo San Lucas a premium full day starts at $1,308.

Not with us. A professional captain and crew are on the included list of all 34 boats, so every rental is a crewed charter. The price is for the whole boat, from $498 for a half day on the 23ft Panga, and it includes the tackle and one Mexican fishing license.

No. Our rate sheet has one price for each boat and each trip, and no package price for several days. For a sportfishing vacation of two or three days, you book each day on its own, on the same boat or on a different one. Every price already has the taxes inside.

No. Your fishing guides are the captain and crew of the boat you book. They are on the included list of every boat, with the rods, reels and tackle, so there is no separate guide to hire. The crew tip is not included, and 15 to 20 percent is standard in Cabo.
