Sunset Monalisa: The Sunset Dinner and the Terraces Above the Sea of Cortez

How the gong and conch shell sunset ceremony works at Sunset Monalisa, which terrace to book, what to eat and how to time your Cabo dinner.

Sunset Monalisa

Most places in Cabo let the sun go down on its own. At Sunset Monalisa, somebody hits a gong. Then the conch shells sound, the whole terrace goes a little quiet, and the sky over the Arch turns orange, pink and lilac while you sit there with a glass of wine wondering why every dinner isn't like this.

We get asked about this place more than almost any restaurant in town, and it is easy to see why. It sits on the cliffs above the Sea of Cortez, the Arch at Land's End is your backdrop, and the evening is built around one moment. Here is how the sunset ceremony works, which terrace to pick and how to book it right.

The sunset ceremony: a gong, then the conch shells

The restaurant calls it a ritual: the gong announces the sunset, and the conch shells send their sound out toward the cardinal points. It is short, a little theatrical and very Cabo. It is also your cue to put the fork down and look up.

A December 2025 review on Yahoo Creators describes the moment as something the restaurant does each evening. Sunset time moves with the season, though, so the ceremony moves with it. In late fall and winter the sun sets around 5:30 to 5:45 pm, and in June it is closer to 7:10 pm. Ask what time sunset is on your date when you book, then plan to be seated before golden hour starts, not as it ends.

The terraces: pick your level, pick your view

Sunset Monalisa is built in levels down the cliff, so where you sit changes the whole night. The restaurant's own team describes nine terraces. On the menu you will see three seating zones you can actually book:

  • Main Terrace. The upper level. This is the wide, open view of the sunset over Cabo San Lucas, and the classic first visit.
  • Premium Terrace. A lower, fine dining level with the ocean closer to your table. A good pick for an anniversary or a proposal dinner.
  • Ocean Terrace. Just 3 booths around a fire pit at the edge of the cliff. The restaurant calls it its most exclusive zone, and it books separately from the other two.

What you eat (and drink) while the sky does its thing

Chef Héctor Morales runs the kitchen. His style is Mediterranean technique with the best local ingredients from Baja California, so think seafood, handmade touches and plates that look as good as the view. The official menu lists a 3-course Prefixed menu, a 5-course Signature menu, a 4-course Ocean Terrace Experience and a Chef Experience tasting menu. Prices change, so check the current menu when you book.

Wine people, this one is for you. Sunset Monalisa has held the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2020. The list runs to 290 selections with 1,600 bottles in inventory, and its listed strength is Mexico, so this is a great night to try something from Mexican vineyards instead of the usual pour from home.

Jazz on the Rocks, up top

When dinner wraps, you do not have to leave. Jazz on the Rocks sits at the highest point of Sunset Monalisa and calls itself the first jazz club in Los Cabos. Its site lists doors open Monday to Sunday from 5 to 11 pm, with live music after sunset from about 7:00 to 9:15 pm and the Arch in the background. Dress code is smart casual. Dinner below, a set of live jazz above. That is a whole evening in one address.

How to book it (and how to get the timing right)

The official site gives you three ways in:

  • Standard table: book on OpenTable.
  • Premium table: book on Tock.
  • Ocean Terrace Experience: book on Tock.

Our listing shows the restaurant open daily from 4 to 10:30 pm, and reservations are expected. Hours can change, so confirm when you book. Our tips: book a few days ahead for a normal night and well ahead for a holiday week, ask for your reservation time to land before sunset on your date, and give yourself a little extra time for the drive from your hotel. You can see photos, hours and the booking link on our Sunset Monalisa page.
