Where to Stay in Cabo: Picking Your Area, Plus Hotel vs Resort vs Villa
Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, the Corridor, East Cape or Todos Santos? Here is how to pick your area and your stay in Los Cabos.

Here is the first thing we tell every friend who asks us where to stay in Cabo: Los Cabos is not one place. It is a string of towns and coastlines, and the spot you pick decides how your whole trip feels. Book on the marina and you can walk to dinner and dancing. Book in San José and your mornings start with coffee on a quiet plaza. Book up the coast and your nearest neighbor might be a surf break.
None of these is the "right" answer. They are just different trips. So let's walk through the five areas we send people to, then the hotel vs resort vs villa question, and you can pick the one that sounds like you.
Cabo San Lucas: the marina, the Arch and the nightlife
Cabo San Lucas is the lively end of Los Cabos. You get a busy marina, the Arch at Land's End and big nightlife, all close together. If your group wants to walk out the door into restaurants, beach clubs and late nights, this is your base.
On Playa El Medano you will find our friends at ME Cabo, a beachside hotel with two outdoor pools, a spa and Taboo Beach Club on site. Pedregal, about 8 minutes from downtown, is home to a lot of our villas.
From the airport (SJD), plan on about 50 minutes by car. More on Cabo San Lucas in our Cabo San Lucas guide and nightlife guide.

San José del Cabo: art, food and a slower pace
San José del Cabo is the other town, and it moves at its own speed. There is a historic center with cobblestone streets, a mission church from the 1730s and an Art District full of galleries. From November to June, the Thursday Art Walk fills those streets with people strolling from gallery to gallery.
It is also the closest town to the airport, about 20 minutes away, which makes it a great pick for a short trip. Stay in the historic center at a boutique hotel like Casa Natalia, or down at the Puerto Los Cabos marina at Hotel El Ganzo. Read our full San José del Cabo guide.
The Corridor: resort days and golf
The Corridor is the stretch of coast between the two towns, about 33 km long. This is where most of the big resorts sit, and it has eight golf courses. Think One&Only Palmilla, Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Four Seasons at Cabo del Sol and Grand Velas Los Cabos.
The Corridor also has two beaches known for swimming and snorkeling, Chileno Bay and Santa Maria. Pick it if your plan is pool, spa, golf and a beach you can actually swim at, with both towns a short drive away when you want a night out. See our Corridor guide and our best resorts in Cabo list.

East Cape and Todos Santos: quiet beaches and the Pacific side
Want space? Go a little further. The East Cape trades crowds for secluded beaches, some reached by dirt roads. Los Barriles is the spot for windsurfers and kiteboarders from December through March, and Cabo Pulmo, a UNESCO site, is about two hours from San José. For a resort out here, Four Seasons at Costa Palmas sits on the beach in La Ribera. Plan on roughly 70 minutes from the airport. More in our East Cape guide.
Todos Santos is the Pacific-side option, about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas. It is a Pueblo Mágico founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1723, with cobblestone streets, independent galleries, the historic Hotel California and steady Pacific waves. Playa Los Cerritos is popular with surfers. We list five places to stay here, including Paradero Todos Santos and Rancho Pescadero. Read our Todos Santos guide.
Hotel, resort or villa?
Once you have your area, pick your style. Here is how we think about it.
- Boutique hotel: Smaller, with lots of character, and often right in town. Great for couples who want to walk to dinner. Casa Natalia, for example, is adults-only in San José's historic district.
- Resort: Everything on site. Pools, a spa, restaurants and a beach, so you never need to leave unless you want to. Great for a first trip, a honeymoon or a family that wants zero planning.
- Villa: A whole house for your group. Your own pool, your own kitchen, your own schedule. Great for families, friend trips and celebrations. We have more than 90 villas listed, from Pedregal to Cabo del Sol to Puerto Los Cabos.
