Whale Watching Season in Cabo San Lucas

Every winter, thousands of humpback whales, gray whales, and occasionally blue whales migrate through the waters off Cabo San Lucas. The season runs from December through April, with peak sightings in January and February. The whales travel from Alaska and the North Pacific to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to breed and give birth - and Cabo is right in the middle of their migration route.

What makes Cabo whale watching special is the proximity. You do not need to travel far offshore - whales are regularly spotted from the marina, from beaches, and even from villa balconies in Pedregal. On a guided tour, you will typically be within 50–100 feet of humpbacks breaching, spy-hopping, and slapping their tails. It is one of the most magical wildlife experiences in North America.

Types of Whale Watching Tours

Small-boat tours (10–15 passengers) offer the most intimate experience - you are closer to the water and the whales. These typically run 2–2.5 hours and cost $76–97 per person. Larger catamaran tours offer more stability and amenities (bar, shade, music) and are great for families or anyone prone to seasickness.

For a premium experience, book a private yacht and combine whale watching with a full day on the water - snorkeling, lunch, and cocktails included. Our concierge can also arrange a swimming-with-whale-sharks experience ($202, full day in La Paz) for the truly adventurous. Sighting rates during peak season are nearly 100%.
