Vow Renewal in Cabo: How to Plan a Romantic Ceremony That Feels Like You

A vow renewal has one advantage over a wedding: nobody has to be there. No seating chart, no legal paperwork, no cousins. It can be the two of you barefoot at sunset or thirty friends at a long table, and either one is right. We have helped plan a few of these, and the ones that land are the ones that feel like the couple, not like a package. Here is how to build yours.

Pick the season first

November through April is peak season for a reason. Days sit at 75 to 85°F, humidity is low, and it almost never rains. December through April adds whale season, so a sunset ceremony can come with a humpback breaching in the background. Valentine's Day in February falls right in the middle of this window, which is lovely and also means you book everything well ahead. Summer is hotter and more humid with a hurricane risk, so if you come then, plan the ceremony for early evening.

Where to say the words

Because a renewal is not a legal marriage, you are free to hold it anywhere. Three settings work best here. The beach at sunset is the classic, and the light on the Sea of Cortez side is exactly what you picture. A private dinner with the ceremony beforehand keeps everyone in one place. And the water: a private sunset cruise with a stop at Land's End and a bottle of bubbly is a ceremony and a celebration in one, timed so the sun drops as you finish. Whichever you choose, aim to start 30 to 45 minutes before sunset so the sky does the decorating.

El Farallon

Cliffside, on Camino del Mar in Cabo San Lucas. $$$$, open 3pm to 11pm, a 4.5 from close to a thousand reviews, and one of the few high-end rooms serving late. Quieter and more dramatic than Sunset Monalisa. This is the anniversary dinner room.

Edith's Restaurante

On Avenida del Pescador near Medano Beach. Mexican, $$$$, open 5pm to 10pm, a 4.5 from around 1,170 reviews, with live music. It is the romantic room that still feels like Mexico, which is often the point of renewing here.

Flora Farms

If you want a garden instead of a cliff, this is it: a farm-to-table restaurant at km 30 near San José del Cabo, $$$, a 4.7 from about 3,400 reviews. Dinner runs 5:30 to 9pm Tuesday through Saturday, Sunday is 10am to 2pm only, closed Monday. Reserve well ahead.

Acre Restaurant

Flora's neighbor in spirit, on Rincón de las Ánimas in San José. Farm-to-table, $$$, a 4.6 from over 1,600 reviews, open 11:30am to 10pm most days with a split schedule on weekends. Fireplace, live music, a strong cocktail list, and the kind of setting that photographs well after dark.

The touches that make it yours

• A mariachi serenade. Arranged for the ceremony or for dinner, it is the single most Mexican thing you can add and the one guests talk about for years.
• A private chef. If you would rather keep it to the two of you, a chef cooking where you are staying turns the evening into a world-class dinner with no reservation.
• The sunset cruise. Ceremony on the water, Land's End behind you, bubbly in hand.
• A photographer for one hour. Golden hour only. You do not need a full day.

Before you go

• Book the dinner room first, then set the ceremony time around sunset.
• Peak season reservations go a week or two out at the $$$$ rooms, more around Valentine's.
