A corporate retreat in Cabo works for a simple reason. People show up. It is a short flight from most major U.S. cities, the sun is close to guaranteed, and nobody on your team will skip the offsite. When to go

November through April is the prime window. The weather is warm, dry and sunny, with temperatures in the 75 to 85 degree range and low humidity, so outdoor sessions and team activities are comfortable all day. It is also when whales are in the bay, which is a better icebreaker than anything a facilitator will bring.

If budget matters, look at the shoulder months: May, June and October. The weather is still very good, there are fewer crowds, and rates for rooms and activities are lower. A smaller crowd also makes the trip feel more like yours. We would avoid the heart of summer, roughly July through September, for anything with outdoor sessions. It is hot and humid, and it is hurricane season.

Build the agenda around the day

The mistake we see most is a schedule copied from a city offsite. Cabo has its own clock. Mornings are cool and calm, so that is when to do the real work. Put the strategy session at 8am, not 2pm. Break at noon. Give the afternoon to an activity or to free time, because nobody does good thinking at 3pm in the sun. Bring everyone back together at sunset for dinner. Three days of that rhythm gets more done than three days of eight-hour meetings, and people go home liking each other.

Team activities that do not need a big budget

The best team activities here are the simple ones. A beach morning and a group snorkel cost little and get people talking across departments. Ask about group discounts on activities and on transport, since most operators have them and few advertise them. Build in one afternoon with nothing planned. The unplanned pool conversations are where half the value of a retreat comes from.

Lunch is 11am to 1:30pm and dinner 5:30 to 9pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Closed Monday, so plan around it.

Jazmin's Restaurant

On José María Morelos in downtown San José del Cabo, Jazmin's has a private dining room, a full Mexican menu and live music. $$, a 4.5 from about 1,900 reviews, open 8am to 11pm every day. This is the easy yes for a group of 15 that wants its own space without a $$$$ bill.

Acre Restaurant

The leadership dinner. Upmarket and quiet enough to talk, with rooftop seating and a fireplace. $$$, a 4.6 from around 1,600 reviews, open 11:30am to 10pm on weekdays.

Baja Brewing Company

The casual night. The San José brewpub, with live music and beer made on site, open 11am to 10pm. $$, a 4.5 from close to 1,400 reviews. Put this on the second evening, when people have relaxed.

The Office

The beach lunch. Tables on the sand at Medano, open 7am to 10pm, $$$, a 4.3 from over 5,300 reviews. Loud, fun, and the photo everyone posts.

Practical notes

• Arrange airport transfers in advance for the whole group. It is the first impression of the trip.
• Mix the $$$$ dinner with a local lunch. Small family restaurants, called fondas, serve excellent Mexican food at a fraction of the tourist price.
• Carry pesos for tips. 15 to 20 percent is standard.
• Book prime-season dates early. November through April fills first.
