Every few months someone messages us the same thing: "precios de los vuelos a Cabo San Lucas han bajado", flight prices to Cabo have dropped, should I book? Usually the answer is yes, but the reason prices dropped tells you a lot about the trip you are about to take. Here is how we think about airfare to Los Cabos, from the ground in Cabo.

One airport, one pattern

Flights into Cabo land at Los Cabos International Airport, code SJD, just outside San José del Cabo. Every hotel, villa and beach in the region is a drive from that one runway, so the fare you are watching is the same fare everyone else is watching. That makes the pattern easy to read. Prices follow demand, and demand here follows the weather up north.

Why fares drop when they drop

The high season in Cabo runs through the winter, when the weather here is dry and the weather at home is not. Holidays, spring break and long weekends push fares to their highest. The lowest fares show up in the hot months, late summer into early fall. That is also the rainy and storm season, with warm humid days and brief afternoon showers. So when you see a big drop, check the dates. A cheap fare in September is a real deal if you plan mornings on the water and afternoons by the pool. A cheap fare in February is rarer, and you should move on it.

The shoulder months, late spring and the weeks after the winter rush, are our favorite. Fares are lower than peak, the weather is still very good, and the restaurants are easier to book.

How we watch prices

  • Set a fare alert for your home airport to SJD and let it run for a few weeks. You will learn what normal looks like before you decide what cheap looks like.
  • Be loose on dates. Flying midweek instead of Friday or Sunday is the single easiest way to pay less. A day earlier or later can change the price more than the airline does.
  • Check nearby airports. If you live between two airports, price both. Nonstop service to SJD varies a lot by city.
  • Read the fare class. The lowest fare on the screen is often a basic economy ticket with no seat choice and paid bags. Add the bag before you compare.
  • Nonstop is worth a little more. A connection adds hours and a missed-connection risk. For a short trip, the nonstop usually wins even at a higher fare.

When to buy

Nobody times the bottom. If the fare is under what you have seen over the past few weeks and the dates work, book it. Waiting for a perfect number usually means paying more when the seats around you sell.

What a dropped fare should change

A cheaper flight is not the point of the trip. It is room in the budget. We would put that room into a better sunset dinner, a morning on the water, or one more night. If you are traveling as a family or a group, it is also the moment to compare what you spend on rooms. Splitting one house between six people often costs less per person than six hotel rooms, and the kitchen pays for itself on breakfast alone.

Practical notes

  • SJD is the airport. Do not book into La Paz by mistake; it is a long drive from Cabo.
  • Arrive with a transfer already booked. The arrivals hall has plenty of people offering rides. Walk past them to your driver.
  • Carry a few small peso notes for tips on the way in.
  • Summer fares are the lowest for a reason. Buy travel insurance for a storm-season trip.

Watch the fare, book on the dip, then spend the difference on the trip itself. When you are ready for the next decision, browse our villas in Cabo.
