Cabo San Lucas is the marlin capital of the world. Not the marlin capital of Mexico. Not the marlin capital of the Pacific. The world. The underwater canyon just offshore drops to 6,000 feet and creates a nutrient upwelling that turns this stretch of ocean into a buffet for everything from dorado to yellowfin tuna to 500-pound blue marlin. If you fish, you need to fish here. If you don't fish, you might start.
What You're Catching (By Season)
Dorado / Mahi-Mahi (May - November)
The most fun fish you'll ever catch. Dorado fight like demons, jump repeatedly, and flash iridescent blue and gold in the sunlight. They run 15-40 pounds on average and taste incredible (your restaurant or villa chef will cook your catch). Peak season is June through September when the water warms up and the schools move in. You can limit out on dorado in a half-day trip during peak months.
Yellowfin Tuna (June - December)
Yellowfin tuna are powerhouses that make deep runs and test your endurance. The fish in Cabo waters range from 20-pound "footballs" to 100+ pound monsters. They're caught on everything from trolled lures to live bait. The sashimi from a fresh yellowfin, sliced on the boat 20 minutes after you pulled it from the water, is the best sushi you'll ever eat.
Striped Marlin (October - March)
The glamour species of Cabo fishing. Striped marlin average 100-200 pounds and put on acrobatic displays when hooked, tailwalking, jumping, and running hundreds of yards of line. October and November are prime months. Nearly all marlin are caught and released in Cabo, the fishery is healthy because anglers respect the resource. You get photos with the fish at the boat and then watch it swim away.
Blue Marlin (June - November)
The grail. Blue marlin in Cabo can exceed 500 pounds. They're rare, powerful, and the ultimate sportfish. Landing a blue marlin requires hours of physical effort and a boat captain who knows the grounds. Most anglers fish their entire lives without hooking one. In Cabo, your odds are better than almost anywhere else on earth.
Wahoo (October - February)
The fastest fish in the ocean, capable of 60 mph bursts. Wahoo are relatively rare but highly prized for both the fight and the eating (grilled wahoo is phenomenal). They hit trolled lures like a freight train.
Roosterfish (Year-round, peak June - October)
An inshore species caught from pangas along the beach. Roosterfish have a distinctive dorsal "comb" and are one of the most visually striking gamefish in the ocean. They fight hard for their size (15-50 pounds) and are always catch-and-release. Sight-fishing for roosters on a fly rod or light tackle is the most exciting inshore fishing in the Sea of Cortez.
Types of Charters
Panga (Small Boat) - $250-400 / Half Day
A traditional Mexican fishing boat, 22-26 feet, with a single outboard motor and a local captain who's been fishing these waters since childhood. Pangas fish inshore and nearshore for dorado, roosterfish, snapper, and tuna. They're the most authentic fishing experience in Cabo: no luxury, no fuss, just you, a captain, a cooler of beer, and the ocean.
Pangas depart from the Cabo marina at dawn (usually 6 AM) and fish for 4-6 hours. They hold 2-3 anglers comfortably. Best for: experienced anglers who prioritize fishing over comfort, and anyone on a budget.
Sportfisher (28-35 feet) - $500-900 / Half Day
The sweet spot for most visitors. Sportfishing boats have proper fighting chairs, fish-finding electronics, multiple rod setups for trolling, and enough space for 4-6 anglers to fish comfortably. The captain and mate handle all the rigging; you handle the rod when a fish hits. Half-day trips (6 hours) target dorado, tuna, and wahoo. Full-day trips (8 hours) go further offshore for marlin.
Best for: groups of friends, bachelor parties, families with older kids, first-time offshore anglers.
Luxury Sportfisher (38-50+ feet) - $1,200-3,000 / Full Day
Air-conditioned cabins, multiple fighting stations, premium tackle, experienced tournament captains, and enough space for 6-8 anglers. These boats target marlin, big yellowfin tuna, and wahoo on full-day trips that range 20-40 miles offshore. The captain and crew are often tournament veterans who know exactly where the fish are and how to find them.
Best for: serious anglers targeting marlin, groups who want a premium experience, corporate charters.
What to Know Before You Book
- Book at least a week ahead during peak season (October-March). The best boats and captains fill up fast.
- Start early. Most charters depart between 6-7 AM. The morning bite is almost always the most productive.
- Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. The Cabo sun on open water is merciless. SPF 50 minimum, reapply every 2 hours.
- Bring Dramamine or seasickness bands if you're not sure about your sea legs. The swells outside the marina can be significant, especially December through March.
- You keep the fish. Edible species (dorado, tuna, wahoo) are yours. Take it to a local restaurant and they'll cook it for a modest fee ($15-25). Or have your villa chef prepare it that evening.
- Marlin are released. Striped and blue marlin are catch-and-release in Cabo. You'll get photos and the memory. The fish gets its life.
- Tip the crew. 15-20% of the charter cost, split between captain and mate. They work incredibly hard.
The Fishing Day Done Right
Depart 6 AM from the marina. Fish until noon. Return to the dock with your catch. Take photos with the fish at the cleaning station (the crews hang them for photos). Walk your dorado fillets to a nearby restaurant or hand them to your villa concierge for the chef to prepare. Shower, nap, and eat your catch for dinner with a cold beer and the satisfaction of someone who just pulled food from the ocean with their own hands.
Then book a sunset yacht charter for the following afternoon to recover in style.
