Cabo Phone and WiFi Guide: How to Stay Connected in 2026

You have three ways to get your phone working in Cabo, and the right one depends on how long you are staying and how much you care about the bill. Here is how we set up friends who visit, and what we tell people who plan to work from here for a few weeks.

Option one: a local Telcel SIM

This is our default for anyone staying more than a few days. Telcel has the best coverage across Los Cabos, including the East Cape roads where other networks fade, and you can buy a SIM with a data package at an OXXO convenience store. Two habits make it painless. Ask the vendor to activate it and confirm the data plan is working before you leave the counter. And carry some pesos for top-ups, because the card machines at small stores can be temperamental. Your phone needs to be unlocked for this to work, so check with your carrier before you fly.

Option two: an eSIM

If your phone supports eSIM, this is the no-shop version. Buy a Mexico data plan online before you land, install it, and switch it on when the plane doors open. You skip the store visit and you keep your home number active for texts and calls. Usually the simplest answer for a short trip and for anyone who does not want to swap cards.

Option three: your carrier's roaming plan

Most major US and Canadian carriers offer a daily or monthly Mexico plan, and some include Mexico in the base plan already. Check yours before you leave. It is the least effort, and for a long weekend it is often fine. For a two-week stay, compare it against a local SIM before you decide.

WiFi: where it is good and where it is not

Rentals, hotels, cafes and most restaurants in the two towns have WiFi, and in town it is generally reliable. Two caveats. During peak season, November through April, both cellular networks and public hotspots slow down under the crowd, so do not plan a big upload for a Saturday afternoon on Medano Beach. And before a day trip out of town, download offline maps, so you are covered if the signal drops. If you are working remotely for more than a few days, ask your stay for its actual download speed before you book, and consider a portable hotspot on a Telcel SIM as backup.

WhatsApp runs this town

Restaurants, drivers, tour desks, your concierge: everyone here works on WhatsApp. Install it before you arrive, verify it on your home number while you still have service, and you will be able to confirm a table or a pickup from anywhere with data.

Disconnecting on purpose

Half the point of Cabo is not looking at your phone. Set your out-of-office, tell the people who matter which number reaches you, and then put the phone in the dry bag on the boat. A charged phone with saved numbers is a safety tool. It does not have to be a leash.

Practical notes

• Unlock your phone before you fly if you plan on a local SIM.
• Buy the Telcel SIM at OXXO, activate it at the counter, pay top-ups in pesos.
• Save the address where you are staying and your concierge's number offline.
• Expect slower networks in peak season and weak signal outside the two towns.
• Turn off data roaming on your home line if you switch to a local SIM, or you may pay twice.
• Bring a portable charger. Long beach days and long tours drain a phone fast.
