Packing for Cabo is the easiest packing you'll ever do. The weather is warm and sunny 350 days a year. The vibe is relaxed but not sloppy. The dress code at even the nicest restaurants is "look like you put in some effort, but don't stress about it." Here's exactly what to bring and what to leave at home.
The Universal Rule
Cabo is not formal. Nobody is wearing a suit and tie to dinner. Nobody is wearing heels on the cobblestone streets (and if they are, they're regretting it). The vibe across the entire destination is "elevated casual." Think linen, cotton, light fabrics, sandals that don't look like you found them at a gas station. You want to look good without trying hard.
Daytime: Beach and Pool
- Swimsuits: Bring at least three. They won't dry fast enough between beach and pool days in Cabo's humidity.
- Cover-up or linen shirt: For walking to and from the beach, grabbing lunch, or the water taxi ride. A see-through sarong is not a shirt, despite what Medano Beach suggests.
- Sandals: Quality leather sandals or slides. Not rubber flip-flops. The distinction matters at resort pool areas and beach restaurants.
- Hat: A wide-brim hat or quality baseball cap. The Cabo sun is brutal and a sunburn on Day 1 ruins the rest of the trip.
- Sunglasses: Bring good ones. You'll wear them from sunrise to sunset.
- Rash guard: For snorkeling and water activities. The sun reflecting off the water will incinerate your back in 30 minutes.
Dinner: The Restaurant Spectrum
Upscale Restaurants
Places like Manta, Sunset Monalisa, SEARED at One&Only Palmilla, and Don Manuels at Waldorf Astoria have a dress code that's best described as "resort elegant."
Men: A collared short-sleeve linen shirt or a nice polo. Long pants (chinos, linen trousers, or dark jeans). Loafers or clean leather sandals. No athletic shoes, no tank tops, no shorts at the top-tier restaurants. A blazer is never required but never out of place.
Women: A sundress, nice jumpsuit, or elevated separates (linen pants + a silk cami, etc.). Wedge sandals or nice flats. Statement jewelry if that's your thing. The vibe is tropical glamour, not cocktail party.
Casual-Nice Restaurants
Edith's, Flora Farms, Acre, Come a Casa, and most San Jose del Cabo restaurants. These places have sand floors, open-air seating, and a vibe that's closer to "come as you are, but maybe not in a bikini."
Men: A nice t-shirt or casual button-down. Shorts are fine (not board shorts). Clean sneakers or sandals.
Women: Sundress, romper, or nice casual separates. Sandals. Anything you'd wear to a nice outdoor brunch.
Edith's has sand floors. Wear shoes you don't mind getting sandy.
Beach Restaurants and Bars
The Office, Mango Deck, Sur Beach House, marina bars. These are come-as-you-are spots where swimsuit + cover-up is totally fine. Board shorts and a tank top work. The only rule: wear shoes (most places require them, even if they're just flip-flops).
Taco Stands
Wear whatever you want. The taco doesn't care.
Nightlife
Cabo's club scene (El Squid Roe, Mandala, Pink Kitty) has a loose dress code: no swimsuits, no flip-flops, no tank tops for men at some venues. Beyond that, anything goes. The crowd skews young and festive. Dress like you're going out in any warm-weather city.
Men: Nice jeans or chinos, a fitted t-shirt or casual button-down, clean sneakers or loafers. No athletic wear.
Women: Going-out dress or nice separates. Comfortable shoes (you'll be standing/dancing for hours and the streets are cobblestone).
Activities
- ATV tours: Closed-toe shoes (mandatory), long pants, bandana for your face. You will get covered in dust. Wear clothes you don't love.
- Yacht charters: Swimsuit, cover-up, non-marking shoes (white-soled sneakers or boat shoes, most yachts prohibit dark-soled shoes). Hat and sunglasses. Bring a light layer for the boat ride back when the wind picks up.
- Whale watching: Layers. The boat gets cold when it's moving. Bring a windbreaker or light jacket even if it's warm on shore.
- Horseback riding: Closed-toe shoes, long pants. Sunscreen and a hat.
- Snorkeling: Rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen. Skip the jewelry (salt water and sand are rough on metals).
- Golf: Standard golf attire: collared shirt, golf shorts or pants, golf shoes. Most Cabo courses enforce a dress code.
The Packing List
For a 5-day Cabo trip:
- 3-4 swimsuits
- 2-3 casual daytime outfits (shorts/linen pants + t-shirt/tank)
- 2 nice dinner outfits
- 1 going-out outfit (if nightlife is planned)
- 1 athletic outfit (for ATV, hiking, or gym)
- 1 rash guard
- Sandals (nice pair + beach pair)
- 1 pair of closed-toe shoes (for activities)
- Hat and sunglasses
- Light jacket or windbreaker (for boats and cool evenings Dec-Feb)
- Sunscreen SPF 50+
- Aloe vera (for the sunburn you'll get despite the sunscreen)
What Not to Bring
- Suits, ties, formal dresses: Unless you're attending a wedding, leave these at home.
- Heavy fabrics: No wool, no denim jackets, no thick sweaters. Even in December, daytime temperatures are in the 70s-80s.
- Expensive jewelry: The ocean, the sand, the pools, and the activities are all rough on fine jewelry. Leave the diamonds at home.
- Too many shoes: Two pairs of sandals and one pair of closed-toe shoes cover every situation.
